Ridder.
Gisteren werd ‘Mooi geweest’ ten doop gehouden, een nieuwe bundel columns van mijn hand. De blijde gebeurtenis vond plaats in de rotonde van de Amsterdamse Stadsschouwburg. Tal van bekende, minder bekende en weldadig onbekende Nederlanders maakten hun opwachting. En ik kende iedereen! Niet zo verwonderlijk want ik had het gezelschap zelf uitgenodigd. Het zelfde geldt voor de coryfeën door wie ik zou worden toegesproken en/of –gezongen.
Op mijn uitdrukkelijk verzoek was niemand minder dan Richard Groenendijk op komen draven om de boel aan elkaar te praten. In zijn openingswoord memoreerde de winnaar van de Poelifinario Cabaretprijs dat ik 15 jaar geleden, in mijn functie als recensente van HP/de Tijd, een lovend en liefdevol stukje aan hem wijdde en voorspelde dat deze getalenteerde conferencier nog wel eens in Carré zou staan. Blijkbaar was ik toen al niet op mijn achterhoofd gevallen! En dat terwijl ik nog maar 55 was!
Liesbeth List trad als eerste op. Vroeger heb ik deze zangeres, inmiddels mijn vriendin, nog wel eens geparodieerd met het liedje ‘In Oktober’. Nu zong zij er een van mij, overigens zonder op haar beurt mijn overgearticuleerd gepiep te imiteren; Lists stemgeluid klonk doorleefder dan ooit. Beide liedjes spelen zich af in het zelfde jaargetijde; dat van mij, op muziek van Harry Bannink, heet ‘Herfst in Amsterdam’.
Vervolgens werd ik toegesproken door omnitalent Willem Nijholt die op Amerikaanse-filmmanier vóórspeelde hoeveel hij van me hield. Hiermee kreeg hij al snel de lachers op zijn hand. Ook een huiler. Maar ik hield me in. Als feestvarken moet je je gedeisd houden.
Van uitgever Joost Nijsen ontving ik het eerste exemplaar van mijn boek met op de kaft een schaterende foto, geschoten door mijn jongste zoon die niet alleen designer is maar ook fotograaf . Helaas waren hij en zijn vrouw niet van en op de partij want in het buitenland.
Toen gebeurde er iets waarop ik niet was voorbereid. Voordat Sanne Wallis de Vries (ook zij stond op mijn verlanglijstje) de microfoon ter hand ging nemen om (op mijn instigatie) háár versie van ‘Herfst in Amsterdam’ ten gehore te brengen, werd er door de uitgever een verrassing aangekondigd. Even later verscheen die verrassing ten tonele: in de prachtgedaante van Andrée van Es, wethouder van Amsterdam. Haar toespraak kwam tot me door een waas, niet zozeer van ontroering als wel van verbijstering. In vogelvlucht maar op warme toon nam de bewindsvrouw mijn –onoverzichtelijke- carrière door. ‘Een sieraad voor Amsterdam…’ was de laatste zin die ik opving en waaruit ik concludeerde dat ik waarschijnlijk een soort penning van deze stad in ontvangst zou mogen nemen. Een hele eer. Dus, toen ik op het verhoginkje naast Mevrouw van Es werd ontboden, plooide ik mijn lippen voor alle zekerheid maar tot een gepast gevleide glimlach. Maar deze bestierf waar ik zelf bij stond want wat haalde mijn weldoenster tevoorschijn uit een grote doos? Een ornament waar ik niet van terug had. En het kòn ook niet meer terug want voor ik het wist had ze de oorkonde op mijn jurk gespeld.
Het had de majesteit behaagd…et.cetera. En nu ben ik ridder in de orde van Oranje Nassau. Wel een ridder met een kater. Na afloop heeft de drank iets te rijkelijk gevloeid.
