Verschenen in de Volkskrant, september 2016
Zwanenzang.
De eerste verzen die ik schreef waren sinterklaasgedichten. Zonder rijmwoordenboek; dat bestond nog niet in de barre jaren vijftig. Pas in mijn puberteit kreeg ik er een (voor sinterklaas!), maar toen haalde ik er mijn neus voor op want een beetje dichter schreef rijmloze poëzie zonder hoofdletters en interpunctie.
Later, weer bij zinnen, werkte ik bij de VPRO waar ik mee mocht doen aan een soort cabaretprogramma. Voor mijn eerste radio- en, al spoedig, televisieoptredens maakte ik, zoals door de eeuwen heen een beproefd recept op bruiloften en partijen, parafrases op bestaande liedjes. Daarbij kwam dat rijmwoordenboek goed van pas.
Zo zette ik Annie Schmidts evergreen: ‘Op een Mooie Pinksterdag’ destijds naar mijn hand. Want met de muziek van Harry Bannink kun je alle kanten op. Hoewel… Sinterklazerige stoplappen liggen op de loer.
‘Op de vrije zaterdag,’ heette mijn schrijnende versie die, in tegenstelling tot de vertederende tekst van Annie Schmidt, niet ging over een vader die zijn dochtertje kwijtraakt maar over het omgekeerde:
‘Op de vrije zaterdag
één keer in de week
stond –bescheten- pappa
bij het schooltje
toen je klein was
liet hij mamma in de steek’.
(In die zelfde jaren vijftig gingen kinderen op zaterdagochtend nog naar school).
Maar laat ik de lezer niet langer lastigvallen over mijn jonge jaren. En ook niet over mijn oude. Noch over mijn wel, wee, lief, leed, (klein)kinderen, ergernissen, theatervoorstellingen en geraniums.
Hier volgt nog een parafrase op die Pinksterdag. Annie Schmidt ligt ongetwijfeld te tollen in haar graf want sommige lettergrepen maken flinke hinkstapsprongen. Maar vergeef me: een ‘gewone’ column zit er vandaag niet in.

stop ik met mijn kollum
om nu eindlijk
es te kuieren in het parkie met mijn man.
Gaan we verre reizen maken,
Netflix kijken, eindeloos.
‘n Onbezorgde oude dag,
geen werkdruk meer. Pluk een roos.
Vijf jaar ben ik mooi geweest.
Vijf jaar, dat is veel.
Vijf jaar mocht ik schrijven over Hárry Mulisch, zómerkousen, óuderdom, La Pálmen en toneel.
Dat was Remarquabel en aimabel
en geen betere Buur dan Chris.

Wie schrijft straks op donderdag
even leuk en goed?
d’ Volkskrant is een volle krant.
Voornaamlijk in de V
staat op ied’re bladzij wel een hoogstpersoonlijk stukje en soms staan er zelfs twee.
Welke columnist mag blijven schrijven?
Wie krijgt zijn congé?
Welke columnist heeft pech en moet straks weg
Wie doet nog mee?
Morgen zal ik pleite zijn
Eiglijk al vandaag
Ik zal niet vol verwijten zijn
Maar wel een beetje spijtig zijn
Ik deed het errig graag.
